CHAPTER THREE

PAUL

Aimee is a fascinating woman. The kind of woman I’d gladly break my own rules for. And the more she rejects me, the more I have to have her. Not only because, as she has pointed out, I am used to getting what I want . . . although that’s certainly a factor. But because she poses a challenge. She makes me have to work for it. I have missed the thrill of the chase. Having to break down someone's walls to get to what is inside. I am well aware that that is the definition of forming a deep connection—and how it makes little to no sense to wish to pursue that with a woman I’m most likely to never see again after I leave here. But I hadn't met someone I was willing to do all this work for in a long, long time. She was going to be worth it. I could tell she was. When I asked her out and she said she’d have to think about it, I came very close to dangling my wealth in front of her to push her to make the decision I wanted her to. It was the fastest and easiest way to get a woman to say yes. It worked every time. But I needed to know that she was interested in me beyond that, in the same way that I was interested in more than just getting her into a bed.

She waited two whole days before texting me. Which is not very long in the grand scheme of things, but I was in Somerville for a finite amount of time. She joked that the date better be great enough to make up for the fact that I almost killed her. We arranged for a spot to meet later that day, and I had another challenge to overcome. World-famous restaurants and expensive gifts were not an option here. First off, because we were in Somerville, after all, and secondly because of the light I wished to shine upon myself in this case.

Getting into Aimee's mind and trying to figure out what she would enjoy was near damn impossible. I didn't know her well enough, or at all really, but even if I did, it would still take a lot of effort to decode her deepest desires. So, I decided to turn to the only person I knew well and I was comfortable enough drawing information from: myself. I figured that if I truly wanted Aimee to see and hopefully like the real me, I needed to show her who that was. At times it felt like I barely knew myself. It had been so long. But I used to be a simple guy, who found joy in the simple things. That guy was still inside me, locked away at the back somewhere. I needed to reach him.

It is ten minutes after the time we agreed to meet up and Aimee is nowhere to be seen. I got here around five minutes before the agreed time.
